Although it appears simple, the spiral has been integral to history and various cultures for millennia. One of the earliest representations of the spiral of life can be found at Newgrange in Ireland. This ancient site features carved spirals in the form of a Triskelion (three spirals) on its entrance stone, symbolizing the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, dating back to 3200 BCE. It may also represent male, female, and child, signifying the continuity of life.

There is no documented history of the spiral of life in Ancient India. India has a long history of invasions, during which much history, texts, and other significant documentation were lost or destroyed. Consequently, much of what we know today was passed down orally and later recorded from memory. Nonetheless, the spiral of life is still evident in yoga, Hinduism, and Buddhism.

In yoga, the spiral of life encourages yogis to embrace flow and transformation, as it symbolizes the path of self-discovery and life's cyclical nature. It represents the winding paths we must travel to truly understand and love ourselves. It also urges us to look beyond the recurring cycles in our minds and lives to achieve true growth. Each time we step onto our yoga mats, we surrender to the flow and journey of the asanas (yoga poses), preparing our minds for meditation.

In Hinduism, the spiral appears in various forms. One representation is the Shankha, or conch shell, which is a significant prayer item. The Shankha symbolizes purity, divinity, and spiritual awakening and is associated with the Hindu deity Vishnu and the sacred syllable "Om." "Om" is believed to be the primordial sound of creation and is a common mantra in meditation. Another form of the spiral is the Kundalini spiral. Kundalini is a type of divine feminine energy often depicted as a coiled or spiraled snake at the base of the spine at the Muladhara chakra, or root chakra. There is a type of yoga dedicated to activating or awakening this energy, known as Kundalini Yoga. Practitioners of Kundalini Yoga see it as a path to spiritual evolution, focusing on awakening and connecting with the universe.

Shivas eye shell (a representation of Lord Shiva's third eye), The third eye chakra spiral, the Unalome, and the cosmic egg, and the spiral goddess, are among some other forms of the spiral known to be associated with Hinduism and Buddhism. The Cosmic egg and the spiral goddess represent the sacred womb or the source of creation for all the universe and cosmos. Whereas the unalome is associated with Hinduism and Buddhism. The unalome symbol has its roots in Buddhist and Hindu spirituality. In Buddhism, it signifies the path to enlightenment, embodying life's journey with its various ups and downs, challenges, and struggles toward achieving ultimate enlightenment or nirvana. The spiral or curve at the bottom represents an individual's initial state of confusion and delusion. As one advances along the path, the symbol gradually straightens, symbolizing personal growth, wisdom, and mental clarity. The straight line at the top represents enlightenment or complete understanding. In Hinduism, the unalome is linked to the chakras, which are energy centers along the spine. The symbol denotes the awakening of these chakras and the process of spiritual development. Each curve corresponds to a different chakra, beginning at the base of the spine and ascending to the crown. The straight line at the top indicates the final stage of enlightenment and spiritual awakening.

These are just a few examples from history, various cultures, and religions where the sacred spiral or spiral of life has been utilized. I could easily write an entire book on the symbolism, examples, and history of the spiral of life! To me, it is a significant symbol representing the cycles of life, how we gain deeper understanding, evolve, and achieve spiritual enlightenment. It serves as a reminder that life isn't always smooth, and sometimes when we feel like we're spiraling, we're actually on the path to deeper understanding. This is why I chose an unalome tattoo as a reminder that, despite facing many ups, downs, struggles, and challenges, I will eventually reach enlightenment or nirvana. Since nothing lasts forever, all difficult times eventually come to an end. This is also why I named my business Spiral of Life Homestead & Wellness. We are all on this journey together; we may take different paths, but ultimately, we all have the opportunity to transform chaos into alignment, and to find our own version of nirvana.

So, if you're feeling particularly stuck lately, perhaps life is urging you to step back and view things from a different perspective.
